Teaching of the Chinese Language by the Confucius Institute of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

The Confucius Institute was established at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in December 2018 and is a collaborative project between AUTh, Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), and the Confucius Institute Headquarters.

The "Confucius Institute" is a non-profit educational organization with the primary goal of contributing to the preservation and dissemination of the intellectual heritage of both countries. Its purposes include teaching and promoting the Chinese language, developing collaborative educational and research programs among universities, and promoting Chinese culture through various cultural and educational events offered to the broader public of AUTh and Thessaloniki.

The winter semester of Chinese language courses for the academic year 2022-2023 covers the period from September 19, 2022, to January 15, 2023.

All students and citizens over the age of 18 who are interested in the winter semester of the 2022-2023 academic year are kindly requested to carefully read the announcement and registration instructions by September 4, 2022, and complete the application form provided therein. here.

General Information About Courses:

Classes will take place once (1) a week, with English as the primary language of communication with the teacher.
Specifically, three academic hours (40 minutes each) will be held once a week (15 weeks per semester).
At the end of each semester, students at AUTh undergo a final assessment, and a certificate of attendance is issued. The assessment results do not affect whether a student can continue to attend the same or the next cycle of courses in the following semester.
In the winter semester of 2022-2023, the following levels are offered:

Elementary A
Elementary B
Elementary C
Elementary D
Intermediate A
Intermediate B

For the Elementary A level, the following options are available:

  • For Elementary A (General Department) (Book HSK1), the following sections are available:
    • A1 Monday 17:00-19:00 Online Only.
    • A2 Wednesday 17:00-19:00 In-person, but classes will start online.
    • A3 Friday 17:00-19:00 Online only.
    • And the New Course Cycles:
      • Spoken Chinese, Saturday 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM, In-person classes, but lessons start online.
      • Introduction to the Chinese Characters, Thursday 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, In-person classes only.

For the Elementary B level (Book HSK2), the following sections are available:

  • B1 on Saturday from 16:00 to 18:00, Online only.
  • B2 on Saturday from 16:00 to 18:00, In-person, but classes start online.

For Elementary C (Book HSK3 上), the following sections are available:

  • C1 Mondays 18:00-20:00 In-Person Only.
  • C2 Fridays 17:00-19:00 Online Only.

For Elementary D level (Book HSK3下), the following section is offered:

For Intermediate B level (Book HSK4上, Chapters 6-10), the following section is offered:

  • Intermediate B 10:00-12:00 Saturday Online Only

Attention

  • Whenever "Online Only" is mentioned in the schedule, the course will be conducted entirely remotely in all cases to serve our students, including those outside Thessaloniki.
  • Where it is mentioned in the schedule as "In-person, but classes start online," it means that the classes will be conducted online until the teacher arrives in Greece from China. The date of the switch from online to in-person will be announced to the students in a timely manner.
  • Where it is mentioned in the schedule as "In-person only," the classes will be conducted by Ms. Lyu Yiwen at the Confucius Institute's premises, located at Vasileos Irakleiou 32. Classes will be in-person only if they comply with the guidelines of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. All protective measures will be taken when attending in-person classes.
  • A section that does not have at least 5 participants will not take place.
  • Confucius Institute reserves the right to change the schedule as deemed necessary with notification to the students.

The cost for the semester is:

Applicable for Elementary A, B, C, D, as well as New Courses, Spoken Chinese, and Introduction to the Chinese Characters.

  • 150 euros for undergraduate students (with a student ID):
  • 170 euros for employees working at AUTh (with proof of employment)
  • 170 euros for unemployed individuals (with unemployment card)
  • 200 euros for employed individuals/general category (no proof required)

For Intermediate A & B:

  • 170 euros for undergraduate students (with student ID).
  • 190 euros for employees working at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (with supporting documentation).
  • 190 euros for unemployed individuals (with unemployment card).
  • 220 euros for working individuals/general category (no proof required).
  • The above fee includes the cost of course materials required for the classes.

Student Selection Process

  • Student selection is based on the date of submission of their online application and completion of their registration.
  • Within a reasonable timeframe after submitting the application, you will receive information regarding whether your application has been accepted. The informational message will include all details about completing the registration process (such as account numbers, etc.).
  • A section that does not have at least 5 participants will not take place.
  • Registration is completed by making an immediate one-time payment of the tuition fees owed and sending the bank transaction receipt as a PDF file (only) to the IK email. Also, for better service and proper archiving, please make sure the file name is in Latin characters with the student's name (not the guarantor's) followed by 99512 (e.g., In case the tuition fees are not paid, the seat will be available to the next interested party in the order of application.)
  • Refunds are only possible within the first 10 days from the start of the classes. To request a refund, you must follow the provided instructions.
